Can / Could / Able to
Модальные глаголы can, could и конструкция to be able to используются для выражения умственной или физической способности/возможности совершения действия.
Present
Для выражения общей способности/возможности в настоящем времени используется “can/can’t + bare infinitive” или “am/are/is(n’t) able + to-infinitive”:
He is able to/can hold his breath underwater for two minutes.
You aren’t able to/can’t fully sympathize with others unless you have had the same experience.
Is she able to work well under pressure? / Can she work under pressure?
Past
Для выражения общей способности/возможности в прошедшем времени используется “could/couldn’t + bare infinitive” или “was(n’t)/were(n’t) able +to-infinitive”:
I was able to/could do the splits when I was a kid.
Mike wasn’t able to/couldn’t catch up with the rest of the class - that’s why his parents hired a private tutor.
Were you able to ride a bike when you were 6 years old? / Could you ride a bike when you were 6 years old?
Для выражения однократной возможности/способности совершения действия (то есть того, что вы или кто-то другой смогли или не смогли сделать в какой-то ситуации), используется конструкция “was(n’t)/were(n’t) able + to-infinitive”:
The house wasn’t new and we were able to get a discount.
She really wanted to get her nose pierced and I wasn’t able to change her mind.
They weren’t able to cross the border because the path through the mountains was blocked with snow.
Future
Для выражения общей или какой-то особой способности/возможности с привязкой к будущему времени используется конструкция “will/won’t be able + to-infinitive”:
Will you be able to pick me up at 4 o’clock?
“Can” и “could” чаще всего используются с глаголами чувственного восприятия (feel, hear, see, smell, taste) и глаголами умственной деятельности (believe, decide, remember, understand), когда мы говорим о каких-то конкретных ситуациях.
I can’t feel my arm.
Can you hear these strange noises?
I couldn’t decide whether I needed a new pair of jeans.
Manage to / Succeed in
“To manage to do sth” используется в ситуациях, когда мы хотим сказать, что нам удалось что-либо сделать, несмотря на трудности:
He always manages to grab everyone’s attention.
I didn’t manage to fix your laptop, sorry.
Will you manage to keep it a secret?
“To succeed in doing sth” имеет схожее значение, но более формальный оттенок:
My little sister always succeeds in ruining my plans.
The company succeeded in doubling its revenues.
He will definitely succeed in getting promoted.
